In 1899, Sally Windmüller founded the Westfälische Metall Industrie company in Lippstadt. He initially produced lanterns for carriages and bicycles, but quickly recognized the signs of the times and developed headlights for the upcoming car. The Hueck family of industrialists from Lüdenscheid took over the company in the 1920s and expanded the production of headlights and taillights.

At the beginning of the years of the economic miracle in Germany, Hella began to create international locations, and also began to develop electronic products such as signaling relays. The strong growth of electronic components in vehicles since 1990 has made the company important in certain automotive electronics product segments, such as accelerator pedal sensors and radar sensors.

As a strong partner of the automotive industry, Hella is and has always been an engine of products, such as xenon or LED headlights. Start&Stop technologies in vehicles work thanks to Hella’s intelligent battery sensors. In addition, the company founds joint venture companies over time to open horizons and intelligently group different subject areas.

The sale of spare parts has been integrated into the aftermarket industry and includes a wide range of products and diagnostic expertise for independent workshops.

In 2014, Hella became a publicly traded family-owned business; the family holds over 60 percent of the shares and the majority on the shareholders’ committee.
